Questions clients ask first

About the service

What exactly is Davey & Daughters?

A founder-led, buyer-side private automotive advisory. Alex Davey acts for buyers, owners and collectors of significant cars: advising on decisions, running acquisitions, and coordinating everything around ownership through a network of specialist partners. No stock, no showroom, no seller commission.

Is this a dealership or brokerage?

No. Nothing is ever sold to you from stock, and no seller pays a commission. When you sell, Alex advises and coordinates the route; he does not act as the selling dealer or auctioneer.

Do I deal with Alex or a team?

Alex, throughout. Specialist partners do the physical and technical work under his coordination, but the relationship, the advice and the accountability are his.

I have one car. Is this for me?

Yes. The Garage and Deal Review exist precisely for one car. Nobody will attempt to upgrade you.

What counts as a significant car?

Anything where getting it wrong would hurt: financially, historically or personally. That includes classics, modern classics, performance and specialist cars, and the odd car whose significance is entirely sentimental. Significance is not a price threshold.

Buying and sourcing

How does a search actually work?

A written brief, an honest market map, a shortlist with evidence, seller enquiries, inspection by an independent specialist, negotiation, and a documented purchase. The full sequence is on the How It Works page.

Can you look at a car I found myself?

Yes: Deal Review. It is the most common first engagement.

Will you tell me not to buy?

Regularly. It is the most valuable sentence in the service.

Who inspects the cars?

Independent marque specialists and inspectors, chosen per car, commissioned by Alex, reporting findings you see in full.

Imports and international

Do you handle Japanese imports?

Yes, end to end: search, auction-sheet verification, local inspection, purchase, shipping, customs, UK registration and handover, through established specialist agents, with every cost category mapped before commitment.

I live abroad. Can you act for me in the UK?

Yes: viewings, checks, purchases, storage, transport and onward delivery, with one UK point of contact.

Collections and ongoing care

What does ongoing collection support include?

A plan, an annual review, servicing and storage oversight, transport, renewals, records and one number to call. See The Stables.

Do you own storage or workshops?

No, and the site will never imply it. Facilities and specialists are vetted partners, coordinated and held accountable on your behalf.

We have inherited cars and do not know where to start.

Start before anything is moved, sold or restored. An initial review establishes what exists, what it is worth and what it costs to hold, alongside your legal and tax advisers. See The Motor House.

Fees and terms

What does it cost?

Fixed fees for reviews, a retainer-and-success-fee structure for acquisitions, scoped fees for projects, and retained relationships for continuing care, all agreed in writing before work starts. Details on the Fees page.

Are you paid by anyone else in the deal?

No seller commission, ever. Any potential referral fee from an introduction is disclosed before you act.

Is there a contract?

An engagement letter and Terms of Business, in plain English, before any paid work.

Privacy and discretion

Who sees what I send you?

Alex. Enquiries are not shared, sold or added to marketing lists. The Privacy Notice sets out the detail.

Will my cars appear on your website?

Only with written consent, anonymised. Most never appear anywhere, which suits their owners fine.

Are you on WhatsApp?

Yes, as a direct line to Alex, not a support channel.

The awkward ones

Why should I trust you?

You should not, yet. Read the case files, read the terms, have the first conversation, and start with something small. Trust is the output of the process, not the entry requirement.

What are you not good for?

Regulated advice, in-house mechanical work, and anyone who wants to be told their car is perfect. There are cheaper ways to hear that.
